A private affair on a friend's farm with their collection of old buildings and equipment. It's a very low-key event meaning we can dress in whatever era we like. For me this means Edwardian.<br />
<br />
Or in this year's case late "Teens." <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1BmfXa4q-CWCNKTBIaHUK8TKTOSv0iiwmGv8i3YFKk9t0hV8AgVboVjWtqDxhl8Z1new3fkw1FddQfZ5g-AlkpKqp1uwUzdT-O-97Mew8l-bP_oRNfDg9q0WO5oGs8JOsQWgqGLHZvg/s1600/image-77363.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1BmfXa4q-CWCNKTBIaHUK8TKTOSv0iiwmGv8i3YFKk9t0hV8AgVboVjWtqDxhl8Z1new3fkw1FddQfZ5g-AlkpKqp1uwUzdT-O-97Mew8l-bP_oRNfDg9q0WO5oGs8JOsQWgqGLHZvg/s320/image-77363.jpeg" width="240" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I had bought the material and patterns for the outfit I wanted to wear back in the spring and never got around to making them up.<br />
<br />
The blouse is made with a<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/209926677/ladies-blouse-with-neckline-and-sleeve?ref=shop_home_active_26"> "Repeated Original"</a> pattern from Etsy. I really enjoyed this pattern, it didn't take much to ease it out to the right size and it came together beautifully! The main fabric is a pink and white striped, lightweight, shirting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-gpKQP7mQFJXGZDAAiP1xPuWcgFzXk9JhIYeifaHQ6Z8UIY5GdlDgTwcy-siPvM6qLhnkxJDbAZ37vPbKHQBPyxtxAgOCGFRZVrZHZEHUZUXHKdAhQdmbtd4cF-u9mC2OzqyyO5uvGw/s1600/image-77396.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1280" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-gpKQP7mQFJXGZDAAiP1xPuWcgFzXk9JhIYeifaHQ6Z8UIY5GdlDgTwcy-siPvM6qLhnkxJDbAZ37vPbKHQBPyxtxAgOCGFRZVrZHZEHUZUXHKdAhQdmbtd4cF-u9mC2OzqyyO5uvGw/s320/image-77396.jpeg" width="256" /></a></div>
I then thought that perhaps it needed a bit of decoration. I came across a vintage pillowcase in my stash that was in pretty rough shape, but luckily, the lace work was still in good condition. Epiphany! Lace collar!<br />
<br />
I had just enough to make both collar and "Yoke" pieces, with enough plain material left over to do the cuffs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlmmIN6Zm1T7ky3lg-a5ZYITdotePTy-CDB0u1TzNj-KgTgWPcz5HgCMOcwlHMxc3GaEzA5A-iqfNhfkYFqQvLj3J7P2-wXg2zreTQvRjtlswmQW4XBuu1RtbI0GagHo9x0NNgzSARDg/s1600/image-77420.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlmmIN6Zm1T7ky3lg-a5ZYITdotePTy-CDB0u1TzNj-KgTgWPcz5HgCMOcwlHMxc3GaEzA5A-iqfNhfkYFqQvLj3J7P2-wXg2zreTQvRjtlswmQW4XBuu1RtbI0GagHo9x0NNgzSARDg/s320/image-77420.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The skirt, I had made earlier in the year from <a href="http://www.pastpatterns.com/9682.html">"Past Patterns 9682"</a> but it had needed some re-fitting. I seriously LOVED this skirt! I mean, how great is it that there are just two pieces (Plus the waistband) and it has POCKETS too!! All built in to those two pieces. Of course this meant it was a breeze to expand to my measurements. (In fact I added too much and had to take it back in) The fabric is a blend bottom-weight that I had bought at Jo-ann's so it has a bit of a stretch to it, which is a bit annoying, but not too bad. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0jb-lXw60pXa82L5qZr04iQgETXpYRsbVvQpLT-Hy7zQMFsvlYC2lQcaUD2lczvhV8mhvfF-034LeUCzIE-nU0KD9mhSnRhYpXwuo7lglJDrH0zyCo4IYgCorVfonxSFtRyaW6lOxQQ/s1600/image-77468.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="554" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0jb-lXw60pXa82L5qZr04iQgETXpYRsbVvQpLT-Hy7zQMFsvlYC2lQcaUD2lczvhV8mhvfF-034LeUCzIE-nU0KD9mhSnRhYpXwuo7lglJDrH0zyCo4IYgCorVfonxSFtRyaW6lOxQQ/s320/image-77468.jpeg" width="184" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
All in all, this has become one of my favorite outfits! I can't wait to wear it again this summer, the fabric is so light and airy, and not to mention... POCKETS! I'd almost forgotten what a joy this convenience was! <br />
<br />
Until next time<br />

When we moved the TV downstairs to the front parlor, I noticed that E-bug became fascinated with it! He loved to deposit poor "Pooh" (As he calls all bears) into the floor and sit on the chair himself.<br />
<br />
This gave me an idea. As there once was a little blonde girl with a beloved little red rocking chair, I decided he needed one of his own!<br />
<br />
Luckily, Joshua had a few child size rocking chairs in the attic, preserved from his childhood. This one just so happened to be yellow. Though the paint was in extremely rough shape, I just so happened to have an abundance of yellow paint left over from a certain little boy's nursery.<br />
<br />
I scrubbed it down and gave it two good coats of yellow.<br />

For years I have admired the costuming in the Glenn Close "Sarah; Plain and Tall" series. And now that I have a son I have especially drooled over the little boy "Caleb's" style. There was just something about the big "Blousy" Overalls that cried to be re-created.<br />

<br />
<br />
So I took to the internet.<br />
<br />
Sadly, the amount of boys patterns, especially ones from the period, are extremely limited.<br />
<br />
This meant that I had to step out of my comfort zone into the world of drafting... <br />
<br />
I found <a href="http://www.lovesewingmag.co.uk/free-sewing-patterns/for-kids/item/390-baby-dungarees-free/">THIS</a> pattern in my stash, that I had used for E-bug a couple times, took some measurements, and set to work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc9aCsLt82AMrNoMb9cTX5zBdm0EL-DiFELV-QxHvUvr0YrzSuuS7QdauHNPZ7JRc895jthBABMyiFfgFE8xU87n45hKAuGrn_0YWwLEb-_xUghH8mOP5Vx3TbTfT9Sl2gbX6YDGnHpw/s1600/image-54318.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc9aCsLt82AMrNoMb9cTX5zBdm0EL-DiFELV-QxHvUvr0YrzSuuS7QdauHNPZ7JRc895jthBABMyiFfgFE8xU87n45hKAuGrn_0YWwLEb-_xUghH8mOP5Vx3TbTfT9Sl2gbX6YDGnHpw/s320/image-54318.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
I used a beige linen blend that I had in stash, originally for a set of 1920's beach pajama pants that never got made, and some white cotton as a lining.<br />
<br />
I fully lined them for two reasons, we had had a bit of cool weather, so I was worried about warmth, and this linen was a tad rough, so I figured the cotton would be softer on toddler skin. (It ended up being rather opposite weather... but E-bug seemed to stay quite cool in these anyways)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-0bbikjbk9l22GQELBh9g3SNxVjMn_PdC8uFLu6OclwEUACYfQ8STfZLnOFSOwvMDfrmt_8QkhiA1gEy5t24nzuknU_VzghR61SRaph3zJolH9VxiE8S6b7I_eRH-Cy-GqK23ZNzpaA/s1600/image-54303.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-0bbikjbk9l22GQELBh9g3SNxVjMn_PdC8uFLu6OclwEUACYfQ8STfZLnOFSOwvMDfrmt_8QkhiA1gEy5t24nzuknU_VzghR61SRaph3zJolH9VxiE8S6b7I_eRH-Cy-GqK23ZNzpaA/s320/image-54303.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Sadly I don't have any progress photos... But I ended up making them way too big, they looked like he could have fit several clowns and a set of bowling pins in them...<br />

<br />
I have often watched period films set in Elegant homes and seen, what I believe are called "Austrian" Curtains, or "Balloon" curtains, including, though I cannot find a screenshot right now, Lucy Honeychurch's Room in the Pensione in the 1985 "A Room With a View."(Helena Bonham Carter.)<br />

<br />
<br />
I have long admired their elegance, and been searching for a way to incorporate them into our room. First off, they cannot be bought for less than a kidney, as they are rare and so have to be custom made usually out of silk tulle.<br />
<br />
Sadly, this young family cannot afford $200+ a panel... So I turned to my sewing room.<br />
<br />
Also, Since our new bed doesn't have a headboard, the clanging of the ancient Venetian blinds that were on there was seriously annoying!! <br />
<br />
But how to do it? I long debated buying a bolt of some material or other, to have enough fabric to do it. I threw around the idea of linen, then went down to muslin, dabbled with satin or tulle, but all those options involved a lot of work and still $100+ in materials.<br />
<br />
Then brilliance hit...<br />
<br />
I bought four more cheap sheer panel curtains like we had "Draped" the room in.<br />
<br />
I flat felled two of them together length-wise, and ironed a crease along the center.<br />
<br />
Then came my handy dandy Ruffler foot that came with my Treadle.<br />
<br />
I call these photos simply "Froth" Haha!<br />

<br />
Eventually I can hand sew small rings on the back at intervals and turn them into shades that will raise, but right now I am seriously loving the color of the light that comes through them!<br />
<br />
I will however be getting a matching set of red panels to go along the sides and hid the mild wonky-ness of them.<br />

As the temperature dropped I decided to take care of something that had been bothering me.<br />
<br />
I forgot to take my Christmas wreath off my front door when we packed things away last year... and there it stayed... until now!<br />
<br />
I took to Pinterest looking for inspiration, ( You can see some of my thoughts <a href="http://pin.it/TFMv_MD">HERE</a>, if you dig a bit)<br />
<br />
It was then to Hobby Lobby that I went. I decided I liked the simple grapevine wreath, and something with a touch of fall color, but wasn't overly screaming "Maple Leaves and Pumpkins!!"<br />
<br />
I came out with a handful of things, made double, as My mom kept E-bug while I shopped, so I decided to make one for her as well.<br />
<br />
It's hard to explain my creative process when it comes to flower arranging. It just sort of happens... A little of this here, some of that there, a pop of pizazz and Voile!<br />
<br />
The final result!<br />

I jump back into the sewing room and creativity flies from my fingers!<br />
<br />
So over the next few days I'll be posting a few things all about the new projects I'm working on, and completed.<br />
<br />
For today's project meet Seabiscuit. So christened several years ago by my mother, just after I found him. I Purchased Seabiscuit at and antique sale for the great price of $15 intending for her to be used by a friend's daughter when she came to play. He saw several happy hours of play back then and has been gathering dust since.<br />

<br />
I pulled him out of the moth balls when my son came along, and he was seen in several of E-bug's "Monthly" baby photos.<br />

But then one day I realized something. Just after bug started walking he grabbed hold of the seat and red paint flakes came away on his hands... And mama's danger warning went off! No more playing with Seabiscuit!<br />
<br />
I recently decided to do something about it. I could put the little friend away, never to be used again, or I could paint it. And I suddenly hear antique collectors everywhere gasp in horror! I thought the same thing. Wouldn't it be sacrilege to cover up the original finish? Perhaps... but if it was only worth $15 to someone who knew what they were doing, then it was worth more to me to have my children able to play with it. So to Lowes I went.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The face was made with a, now tattered, decal, so I painted the more faded side, and left the other mostly untouched. I'm not worried about lead paint with the decal so I'll leave it alone for now and someday, go in with smaller brushes to re-work the details. Until then, I simply used a sharpie to brighten the details.<br />

<br />
Hello All!<br />
<br />
So, my darling wife Megan has asked me to draft a post regarding our newest project…S/V Lady Anne.<br />
<br />
As some of you might already know, I was, for a time, an officer in the Navy. While a midshipman at Annapolis, myself and two other friends devised a scheme to purchase a small sloop and live aboard her while going through flight school. Ultimately, this plan, though adventurous…proved illogical for three penniless young ensigns. Time passed, we went our separate ways, and sadly, in 2005, we lost one of our trio to a tragic aircraft incident.<br />
<br />
Years went by, and I eventually returned from sea, settled in historic Harriman…and of course, met the love of my life.<br />
<br />
About six months ago, I decided that the small fishing boat and motorcycle I never used had become monuments to vain attempts at combining my past with my present. What was needed was something epic…something that connected my love of the sea to the new adventure of marriage and fatherhood.<br />
I had my crew…all I needed was the ship.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMbMvxfPHcwkQNN958TKmVbvTI9KjLc3IORpr_aUglndHi7v-6lYy6sx_LMrUUFgQVtaSrdaTCVZ6eL6LtVXuyErO-Al_7WDVY41xx_ib-EwUKvxg5tuv_2FNH-X0uGCUsQCOAhbR4Hg/s1600/19030692_720856988096977_4137698940872904191_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMbMvxfPHcwkQNN958TKmVbvTI9KjLc3IORpr_aUglndHi7v-6lYy6sx_LMrUUFgQVtaSrdaTCVZ6eL6LtVXuyErO-Al_7WDVY41xx_ib-EwUKvxg5tuv_2FNH-X0uGCUsQCOAhbR4Hg/s320/19030692_720856988096977_4137698940872904191_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
After a lengthy search, I found a suitable Cal 2-25 sloop within my price range, called the owner, and set a meeting time to see the vessel. Unfortunately, it sold before I could arrive. However, the owner was gracious enough to assist me in continuing the search. The next craft I viewed was an older Catalina 22 at a private dock. Though a viable prospect, the owner wanted much more than it was worth, considering the amount of work that would’ve been required to restore it. Finally, one rainy day mid-summer, I drove to a marina on Watts Bar Lake to view a 36 foot boat being sold for the inconceivable sum of only $500…and found that to save it, would undoubtedly cost ten times that much.<br />
<br />
<br />
Despairing, I had all but given up when an ad for a 1976 Chrysler Marine C22 appeared online. It had been “refitted” within the last five years, “dry” for at least one year, and according to the seller, was in tip-top condition. I drove into Knoxville and met what was soon to become my ship. We settled on a price, and I arranged to have the boat shipped to my marina…intending to launch within two weeks. <br />
<br />
As any sailor can tell you…this is never, ever the case with older boats.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-EZY0XL6vPavHIAGKiu43ky_3DriWwXaDxD4yb7BqPJnHjw5trWPVLBI81fvy_0UZt8vkIO9QsI-Nk9QrSARwIvivReR0M4xdcIbyIFcpSRiJ7xMfEHqbr7YdThbItAsuBFvEGQvInA/s1600/IMG_9862.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="720" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-EZY0XL6vPavHIAGKiu43ky_3DriWwXaDxD4yb7BqPJnHjw5trWPVLBI81fvy_0UZt8vkIO9QsI-Nk9QrSARwIvivReR0M4xdcIbyIFcpSRiJ7xMfEHqbr7YdThbItAsuBFvEGQvInA/s320/IMG_9862.JPG" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Excited about my new acquisition, I offered Megan the honor of naming her. We originally opted for the Annie Laurie, after Megan’s famous Scottish ancestor…but soon found another boat was registered under the same name and still sailing in Halifax. I then suggested “Lady Anne” to honor both Lady Laurie, and our mutual love of Lucy Maude Montgomery. I also had fond memories of an old pirate film from the 1930’s where the hero’s (Randolph Scott) frigate was named “Lady Anne”.<br />
<br />
Digging into my project, I discovered several series issues…including a fatal flaw hidden within the hardware supporting the 800 lb cast iron “swing keel”. The system involved metal plates that served as the only real load bearing for the keel, with two inch penetrations into the inner hull that once failed…would allow water to rush into the ship and ruin any good sailing day. <br />
<br />
These plates were rusted away to the point of being unserviceable.<br />
<br />
This repair, feared by many centerboard sailors, required a dry-dock, and fortunately for me, my father-in-law provided both the space and equipment (not to mention the expertise) to make the effort.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOcyA1ZdCp9TEV3Z-fakLoDnf9zuk3mC4zKNxSnixNgPE90zp8sKqtqnENqQ1R5Bn6Oi7CJBzLE5BpDREccu7DTUXDKgQVjrDeLrh-6YKAp2U7kZbPrDWIs-94gtG4TuAuGnzAlyVbiQ/s1600/IMG_9864.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOcyA1ZdCp9TEV3Z-fakLoDnf9zuk3mC4zKNxSnixNgPE90zp8sKqtqnENqQ1R5Bn6Oi7CJBzLE5BpDREccu7DTUXDKgQVjrDeLrh-6YKAp2U7kZbPrDWIs-94gtG4TuAuGnzAlyVbiQ/s320/IMG_9864.JPG" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
The first step was removing the heavy keel itself, requiring that the boat be lifted onto stands we had to build to custom fit the hull. After several weeks, we lifted the boat onto her new temporary bed and set about lowering the monster hunk of iron. Ultimately, I had to saw through the stainless steel hinge pin…the keel dropping loudly into the cradle we had made for this express purpose.<br />

<br />
Once out, we could assess the true nature of the keel brackets…as you can see, they were virtually gone. Had I launched on these, there is every probability that we would have quickly taken on water.<br />
<br />
Megan’s father had a friend who is a master of metal fabrication, and he was good enough to make the new parts in his shop (and teach a bit while he was at it).<br />
<br />
We then began the task of re-fitting these to the boat. Since we opted for mild steel, I coated the parts in John Deer equipment paint before dry fitting for the new hardened stainless pin. Once seated with silicone, we raised the keel back into position (a frustrating four hour job) and were amazed when the pin slid home as planned. The hard part was done…<br />
<br />
…or so we thought.<br />
<br />
The next step was painting the boat. Now experts all have good advice, and one can easily spend several hundred dollars on the proper marine grade, anti-fouling paints. In general, this advice is mandatory, unless one wished to have problems later on (blistering, sea-life infestations, osmosis leaks, etc.). However, after doing some research, I determined that an alkyd enamel of industrial quality should be sufficient for use on a lake (baring zebra mussels) or at least if hauled out and cleaned at least once per year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6xo8yb9tT5zNW0gaO7sowDO0-CrUhyphenhyphenJPTlLwDHf_rIeyZZi6u1eTx2Z0IfDrME6TuDRqSRNZtiAYz7Cz87uyzuiaJ684HenWG_Ln_NHxrNcnbE1FmxXjJ2N-ruIVNIDUM_7Xl4Js3nw/s1600/IMG_0084.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="1024" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6xo8yb9tT5zNW0gaO7sowDO0-CrUhyphenhyphenJPTlLwDHf_rIeyZZi6u1eTx2Z0IfDrME6TuDRqSRNZtiAYz7Cz87uyzuiaJ684HenWG_Ln_NHxrNcnbE1FmxXjJ2N-ruIVNIDUM_7Xl4Js3nw/s320/IMG_0084.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I went with a fire engine red bottom, hunter green hull and gold racing stripe. This was to not only make the boat stand apart among a sea (no pun intended) of white and blue boats…but imitate colors of earlier wood hulled yachts.<br />
<br />
The trouble was that a previous owner did follow the “advice”, and painted a hard ablative (translation…poisonous) bottom paint on. Prepping this surface required use of a full respirator, and again, I took the calculated risk of painting “hard over hard”, hoping that time and the elements wouldn’t remove my coat of enamel.<br />
<br />
Once painted, the boat was now ready to be turned back into a sailing vessel. I had planned on doing very little with the mast…after all, it looked in good shape. However, the stock mast stepping (raising) system consisted of a rather sketchy broken aluminum wedge that did nothing more than level the mast as the shrouds were used to support it. This system, while common for the time, also makes raising or lowering the mast quite a hazardous enterprise. The common solution is installment of a “mast hinge”; essentially a giant hinge that allows the mast to pivot fully supported. <br />
<br />
Again, I was fortunate to have fabrication support.<br />
<br />
Fitting this hinge, aligning it and getting the mast up proved to be perhaps the hardest and most frustrating part of the entire project…but we eventually did it.<br />
<br />
Now, we were ready to launch, right?<br />
<br />
Wrong.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg81CvttfmYo9eP5A2Oju5BCcTVHFQSckbJku4uKI7PShUSifjNYSE6wMxlgO4fvL-6pEX-0TEuBlLFegGAXY_GG4ehfL-B9Y5c64-Bkgo13aaCuBAhXq0Mfe0zYzzSNUin_3JfT76wuA/s1600/IMG_0213.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg81CvttfmYo9eP5A2Oju5BCcTVHFQSckbJku4uKI7PShUSifjNYSE6wMxlgO4fvL-6pEX-0TEuBlLFegGAXY_GG4ehfL-B9Y5c64-Bkgo13aaCuBAhXq0Mfe0zYzzSNUin_3JfT76wuA/s320/IMG_0213.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
It took another week of re-rigging the mainsheet, boom-vang, halyards and outhaul…going through the electrical system, installing a bilge pump and navigational instruments.<br />
<br />
Even then, we were still some ways off from launching.<br />
<br />
The 3,000 lb boat had to be replaced on her trailer, the outboard installed, and then transported nearly a hundred miles before launch.<br />
<br />
The first “catch” was the ’93 Nissan 8 hp outboard that refused to even “crank”, let alone “fire”. After several days of troubleshooting, I took the block apart and found it to be full of sand.<br />
<br />
Scratch one outboard.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_slwMhrPSaV-Al3qNU9coYVZd7Pbl30_LA5FXtK7ZJbtNnU66xOgCGu_1nvIbm1gxRIQM3lmZeq7VycRbR3OOeW-9aowklwa54Xxy8LpUju0nOuL26scKzuetPH2ujWYgdqmhrYgtCg/s1600/image001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="1024" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_slwMhrPSaV-Al3qNU9coYVZd7Pbl30_LA5FXtK7ZJbtNnU66xOgCGu_1nvIbm1gxRIQM3lmZeq7VycRbR3OOeW-9aowklwa54Xxy8LpUju0nOuL26scKzuetPH2ujWYgdqmhrYgtCg/s320/image001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I ended up buying a (much too large) 15 hp short shaft (much too short) motor, we mounted it…and that would be our powerplant for launch.<br />
<br />
The last touch was to place the handmade wood stern plate on.<br />
<br />
Lady Anne was officially ready for the water.<br />
<br />
On the appointed day, my father-in-law, father and close friend Matt all arrived to help. My mother-in-law and lovely bride (as well as “powder monkey” Edmund) rounded out the crew. After a couple of hours of mast raising, re-rigging and final adjustments, we judged it time, and I climbed into the cockpit.<br />
<br />
Our marina is fabulous, and they have a boat ramp off the key, only about a quarter mile from my slip. Therefore, I was expecting a very easy transit to home berth. However, as per usual, “Murphy” showed up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAPQrKs_YIvxkLgDE6r5b2JNMUAr-sRdXUxaRs8R2AGD9cX5YqvDAF7aSYvaykEiV-G1TH2fVUCNSFGe9TkgMkN-aiUiVlCl0mCXxK0zowROMsgKS-eNMhh-ffnb54S5Av7jOeRD-q5g/s1600/IMG_0308.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAPQrKs_YIvxkLgDE6r5b2JNMUAr-sRdXUxaRs8R2AGD9cX5YqvDAF7aSYvaykEiV-G1TH2fVUCNSFGe9TkgMkN-aiUiVlCl0mCXxK0zowROMsgKS-eNMhh-ffnb54S5Av7jOeRD-q5g/s1600/IMG_0308.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
First, the “new” outboard refused to start. After several test runs at home in the drum stand…she wouldn’t sputter to life. Frustrated, we tried everything until I finally got it to come to life, reluctantly. My father-in-law and Matt joined me onboard, and we glided out into the channel without any trouble.<br />
<br />
At this point, I should share a word or two about my concerns at this moment.<br />
<br />
For starters, though I have been a sailor for some time, it had been five years since my last sailboat…a much smaller, simpler 12 foot racer. It had been nearly twenty years since my last experience in a forty foot sloop. The vast majority of my experience had been on the bridge of large amphibious transport ships with a team of eight managing all of the tasks of shiphandling.<br />
<br />
To say the least…I was concerned.<br />
<br />
One of the first things they teach you about being at the helm of any vessel is that boats do not “steer” like a car. Over-steering can create oscillations in movement that can quickly lead to loss of control. Speed, which is vital for maintaining effective rudder control is easily bled off…particularly on vessels that are by necessity, underpowered…as is the case with a mid-size sloop. Without room to tack, raising the sails was an unlikely prospect, and provided I could make it to the pier…not pranging into it (or another boat) was a key consideration.<br />
<br />
Lastly, I was concerned about depth under the keel.<br />
<br />
The Chrysler 22, owing to its variable geometry centerboard, can float in extremely shallow water. However, I had charted some dangerous shoal water on several points of the short transit, and installed a Lowrance Hook 4X system to manage it.<br />
<br />
Naturally, the Lowrance decided not to work this day.<br />
<br />
All of these challenges aside, we made it around the peninsula and lined up for an approach to our slip on the leeward side of the finger piers. There was another sailboat tied up outboard of the pier, and a relatively new 26 foot boat opposite my slip. Because of these factors, I came in wide, slow, and ultimately…too wide, and too slow.<br />
<br />
The boat lost steerageway and started to slip with wind and current.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5cfZI_Lii9iKjSA5PXQh0aCmdRO0uDEJty5EoEet561r9N0NwZn-vc2ZODjj83ZREB771UsBPA8eRx1eB8HQ2RpS-kZf3hBYOwMcwy-QABxJk4zuejqP3aga6pJ3TgEA2ZUn3OCORiA/s1600/IMG_0318.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5cfZI_Lii9iKjSA5PXQh0aCmdRO0uDEJty5EoEet561r9N0NwZn-vc2ZODjj83ZREB771UsBPA8eRx1eB8HQ2RpS-kZf3hBYOwMcwy-QABxJk4zuejqP3aga6pJ3TgEA2ZUn3OCORiA/s320/IMG_0318.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Now in these situations, power is your friend…again, the outboard decided to take a vacation.<br />
<br />
Fighting the motor, and drifting ever closer to the sunken logs on the far end of the inlet; I finally got it to fire and pulled away from the water hazards. At this point, the logical step was to drive straight for the pier, bow on. However, I found that even at full throttle, I couldn’t get the bow over fast enough to thread the needle between what is called “advance and transfer”…nautical terms that essentially mean calculating your actual track over water. In short, if the boat is moving forward quickly under power, but laterally due to wind or current, you will not drive in a “straight” line. <br />
<br />
In order to put my line of travel onto the slip, I needed to get the bow far over to starboard before slamming into the other finger pier only about 200 yards ahead…it simply wasn’t happening.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFRRx9f4Gn34ITwD17TuLgRIg0guNMMSSQewjX_F2jhN4VmMSyIQTYCiVndo2guOHEv8GV3Wx71_NVxlEcpo_ymURTySb-KMGf_-omh8ijzc0rAp3CiPdNpl17wn-egf2m125wIyUpOA/s1600/IMG_0327.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFRRx9f4Gn34ITwD17TuLgRIg0guNMMSSQewjX_F2jhN4VmMSyIQTYCiVndo2guOHEv8GV3Wx71_NVxlEcpo_ymURTySb-KMGf_-omh8ijzc0rAp3CiPdNpl17wn-egf2m125wIyUpOA/s320/IMG_0327.JPG" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
At that point, I decided to “prop walk” at slow speed. The propeller blades, turning clockwise, were slowly “pulling” the boat to starboard, and the boat was advancing slower in the forward direction. In this manner, I hoped to “hop” to the pier…slowly.<br />
<br />
Ultimately, I found that the reverse gear (powered by 15 horses) was sufficient to “back” into the pier, close enough to get a line over.<br />
<br />
We were there…it was done.<br />
<br />
Over the next week, I de-bugged the electrical, fixed a few items that didn’t meet my approval, and was ready for the “maiden voyage”, solo, the following Saturday.<br />
<br />
Again…that troublesome motor refused to start.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXZnhwJ5TZY-Sq1oZ0GhI3GyqpkNl8Ia-ujM0nIVE6UKTv226xbycqg3c84aMWcKnaYelfMPS4cKS2kdEhhy-HOsJawqFopFhISx3yxORyPl3ygYqfKpnDpe717MkGsQ7pndvtGDC3JA/s1600/IMG_0330.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="720" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXZnhwJ5TZY-Sq1oZ0GhI3GyqpkNl8Ia-ujM0nIVE6UKTv226xbycqg3c84aMWcKnaYelfMPS4cKS2kdEhhy-HOsJawqFopFhISx3yxORyPl3ygYqfKpnDpe717MkGsQ7pndvtGDC3JA/s320/IMG_0330.JPG" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
I decided that after so much effort, a new outboard was worth the cost. I sourced a brand new, 6 hp, Tohatsu “Sail Pro” 4-stroke.<br />
<br />
We’ll see this weekend, if newly powered, S/V Lady Anne will finally get under way…<br />
<br />
…this time with my “First Mate” and best friend onboard. <br />

This arrangement worked fine during the first year and a half of maternity and parenthood when all was cozy, but then both of us began to stretch out. We ended up in night-long wrestling matches for space and covers. Despite the bed's history and significance, I was the one who finally decided it was enough, mama need her sleep!!<br />

The light is... well... the highlight! The light bulb is very special, it not only changes color by remote, and has several variegated and solid settings, but it also has a bluetooth speaker!! (Talk about setting the mood!) <br />

It has been so nice to not only have breathing room, but to have the space so dreamy and soothing. Set the diffuser going, turn the light down low, gentle music, and dreamland isn't far away! And now that baby is finally sleeping through the night, so are Mama and Daddy!<br />

<br />
I really loved working this one, as I could do it one piece at a time with no pressure to finish. And because of that I actually DID finish! Though I may eventually go back and add a scalloped border of some kind. <br />
<br />
I simply crocheted the pieces together with a neutral white yarn and voila! Fin! It's so cozy and war, I can't wait to use it this winter for cuddling up on the couch. <br />
<br />
I'm thinking of doing another for my new bed, which I will post about soon. Until then, enjoy these photos! <br />

When I was little I learned both how to knit and crochet, along with many other handcrafts, from my Mother and Grandmother.<br />
<br />
Later on, and Semi- recently, I realized that these "Hobbies" were mounting up, and I then decided to consolidate. I recognized that I preferred the intricacies and tighter "Weave" of knitted items better than Crocheted, and with that, the hooks went on a shelf to gather dust.<br />
<br />
Until about a weeks ago... When I found <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744612428251/">this lovely picture on Pinterest</a>, and fell in love... With a blanket... <br />
<br />
And for the first time in years, I picked up a crochet hook...<br />
<br />
I found some blue yarn in my stash and got started. Unfortunately the remnants of that skein only made three squares... So off to the store I went. I got two skeins in a lighter blue and a grey, and seeing how fast the last skein went, I'm sure I'll need more. These squares are huge! They're a good 6" or more across, much bigger than I thought. It'll be done in no time...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8FiCQWnlj8BOiWhgx6oUf2opwWu0eYgmgdkDp-sSxzLVDdRqYeaarN3CkyXxxCZlCbWbu-6MkPz8rbHylIbGqmpEhHp3olvSkWz__-imZSvK6T89rcWBBtPwvS8xnW1Qpw58D2QeS-g/s1600/IMG_9354.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8FiCQWnlj8BOiWhgx6oUf2opwWu0eYgmgdkDp-sSxzLVDdRqYeaarN3CkyXxxCZlCbWbu-6MkPz8rbHylIbGqmpEhHp3olvSkWz__-imZSvK6T89rcWBBtPwvS8xnW1Qpw58D2QeS-g/s320/IMG_9354.JPG" width="240" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Gladly, though, it is something I can do in my few minutes of spare time. It's Something I can sit down and make a square, and set aside, which is great! I have so many projects that have to wait until Bug is in bed so I can give them my full concentration, and they're just not getting done. Too many times I'm just exhausted after bed- time, and don't last too much longer myself. haha!<br />
<br />
I'll keep you all updated on my progress!<br />

<br />
Back in November we planned a trip, and bought tickets to Biltmore Estate in NC, a favorite haunt of ours. (<a href="http://thehomespuntreadler1914.blogspot.com/2014/10/reason-for-radio-silence.html">See Our Engagement</a>) This would have been E-bug's first trip, and we were so excited for him to see it during the Christmas season. Sadly circumstances dictated that we had to put it off.<br />
<br />
This turned out to be a good thing as it meant I had time, with no interruptions to plan a new outfit!<br />
<br />
Our second Wedding Anniversary was on Valentine's day so we decided to plan the trip around that.<br />
<br />
I had no particular dress in mind, so in mid January when things finally calmed down, I took to Pinterest, my favorite place for mind fodder. I wanted something simple, because I didn't really have a LOT of time, but elegant.<br />
<br />
I finally came across this lovely original, (Click picture for link) that had been for sale on Ebay.<br />
<br />
My original plan was to copy it fairly closely, but to have simple bishop sleeves instead of the added "Puff at the Cuff" detail. I ended up going a completely different direction... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744611890506/"><img alt="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744611890506/" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3DIIKNd6Wcwcf19lBLkO8tmkjXVBlV_xzr_PZpJ-Mxw0idxzA-DCovJn99GdaFTDXzH9tIsHUoozcSsM_DpYc7GlHXGYLRhVdB0GAKsj4cuSW3JddFlAflc9oj99CQ_FdpWzLnP7IPA/s1600/777c0562f7d16210c62c6bcbf483fd9e.jpg" /></a></div>
I was able to find a really close match when it came to fabric... I can't find the link now, but it's a wool blend suiting from<a href="https://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/"> Fashion Fabrics Club</a>. I really Love their site, as you can find good "Blend" materials. They really give you the "Look" without the cost. It's not like buying the real deal, but when you have a toddler that $50 a yard 100% wool would buy a lot of diapers. haha! <br />
<br />
Anyways, on to the changes.<br />
<br />
I started out by "Franken-patterning" the bodice from <a href="http://www.folkwear.com/205.html">Folkwear's Gibson Girl Blouse</a>, and <a href="https://www.trulyvictorian.net/1903-plain-blousewais.html">TVE-41 - 1903 Plain Blousewaist </a>for the top. I also followed the original image and used release tucks below the yoke. I then took a bit of a leap outside the norm for me and used <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/212870832/edwardian-skirt-fan-skirt-worn-about?ref=hp_rv">"Black Snail Pattern's Edwardian Fan Skirt" </a>for the skirt. I ended up really loving this pattern! It came together like a dream! And fit perfectly! I highly recommend this pattern and will be going back for more of hers!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiadGDbVTl4CUVzT2ELxoiacmcppmtd1CpDNTdtZFf2tHh-BNNl6HCO8GSTaMaJmyyOWN8fD-BVuOdZkxvGu9uK8Ui9oDfpFGYmNph0ne7WDahelKDOw8GN3Elq7LZby43EuWsIKiG_Yw/s1600/image-52070.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiadGDbVTl4CUVzT2ELxoiacmcppmtd1CpDNTdtZFf2tHh-BNNl6HCO8GSTaMaJmyyOWN8fD-BVuOdZkxvGu9uK8Ui9oDfpFGYmNph0ne7WDahelKDOw8GN3Elq7LZby43EuWsIKiG_Yw/s320/image-52070.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
While searching in my stash for lace to go on the yoke of the bodice, I found a matching set of vintage pieces. I don't know what era they really are, but they worked. They ended up REALLY simplifying the look of the dress, though. Without the "Fluff" of the inspiration piece, the ruffle around the bottom of the skirt would have just been too much. So I eliminated it completely.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3wuN-s0dOCvhpnFUPKHF8OcdimhWFPjsjICUCkrwGzj1N0RLy9FwNf5WEVUY7_CWgMa60qE_mlJRznUD8Fhs4Rq0NUaD7Sne2Mg-1TyxLhLVoBmhe3qU7uJOsax65jznoMOLS2YqqvA/s1600/image-52054.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3wuN-s0dOCvhpnFUPKHF8OcdimhWFPjsjICUCkrwGzj1N0RLy9FwNf5WEVUY7_CWgMa60qE_mlJRznUD8Fhs4Rq0NUaD7Sne2Mg-1TyxLhLVoBmhe3qU7uJOsax65jznoMOLS2YqqvA/s320/image-52054.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
From there, I added a thin braided lace around the collar and cuff, which took it just beyond the realm of "Plain"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin4dPd4bG29anWOqeT9yB-SYZg8p4M85XSasusAeR07ivcfstXVUwyraCizXxR3Q4tW96K0y9CiW66gvUQEOW5Mwxgy3SDiUwrr1AgNVN2aMuh_oiX4j9M778GZe1hyOtk1vZxQuhR0g/s1600/image-51966.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin4dPd4bG29anWOqeT9yB-SYZg8p4M85XSasusAeR07ivcfstXVUwyraCizXxR3Q4tW96K0y9CiW66gvUQEOW5Mwxgy3SDiUwrr1AgNVN2aMuh_oiX4j9M778GZe1hyOtk1vZxQuhR0g/s320/image-51966.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
I can't tell you how much I loved this "Ensemble" (Which since I haven't mentioned... It IS separates, and not a dress as most originals would be) It was so comfortable, despite being wool, it also wasn't too hot. We did have a bit of a brisk day with highs in the low 50's F, but even in the house where it was heated and overcrowded, it was enjoyable.<br />
<br />
From here, I'll let you enjoy the pictures! It was such a glorious day!<br />

<br />
Are you like me? Did you grow up watching the animated "Anastasia" and become fascinated by the story? Did you ever wonder if the "Rumor in St. Petersburg" was true? Did any of the last four Romanov Grand Duchesses survive the "Execution" at the end of WWI? <br />
<br />
Well, I have just the book for you to put on your reading list!<br />
<br />
My Husband has spent the past five years doing extensive research, reading first hand accounts, and speaking with people who knew, and has written a novel based on the results.<br />
<br />
Follow Agent Philip Barker on his quest to find out the truth!<br />
<br />
<br />
<i>From the tumult of the Russian Revolution, to the streets of
modern-day Moscow, Agent Philip Barker is seeking the truth...the truth
behind the mysterious final days of the Imperial Family of Russia, and
his own heritage.</i><br />
<i>
</i><i>The culmination of five years of research and writing, this story is
intended as the first in a series of novels featuring Philip Barker, set
against the backdrop of History's greatest adventures! ~ Joshua Gillespie</i><br />
<br />
<br />
Find it in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Do-Lilies-Still-Grow-Adventure/dp/1540324257/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1488812697&sr=8-1&keywords=do+lilies+still+grow">PAPERBACK HERE</a> on Amazon, and for<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Do-Lilies-Still-Grow-Adventure-ebook/dp/B01MZYR2MS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1488812697&sr=8-2&keywords=do+lilies+still+grow"> KINDLE HERE. </a><br />
<br />
You can also find it on <a href="https://www.createspace.com/6708050">CREATESPACE </a>and recommended on the <a href="http://www.bernardcornwell.net/readingclub/do-lilies-still-grow/">Bernard Cornwell site</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
You can also add it to your<a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33370677-do-lilies-still-grow"> Goodreads Reading list</a>.<br />
<br />
Have I given you enough links yet? Seriously, you should check it out, and not simply because He's my husband, but because he's written a brilliant book!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Have a look at the trailer and tell me what you think! <br />
<br />

The days have seemed to pass like a flash, and yet, have been a lifetime!<br />
<br />
I wanted to make something special for him for his birthday, as the latter months of his "Monthly pictures" I failed to have a "Mommy Made" item.<br />
<br />
I've not really been able to make anything historic for out boy, as most fashions for little ones of earlier eras was made entirely of dresses, and in this day and age, it wouldn't be understood.<br />
<br />
So I tend to lean toward later fashions, or simply stick to modern clothing. This time I REALLY wanted him to have a Norfolk suit. <a href="https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1239753839">After a VERY long search, I came across this gem</a>. It was a later 1920's suit, so the waistband was lower, but I knew it would take very few alterations to make it work.<br />
<br />
The only problem I had with this pattern (and it isn't something the seller could have fixed) Is it's entirely in German. (She did include a rough translation of the instructions) But! With some help from Google Translate, It came together Beautifully!<br />
<br />
For time's sake I used a striped poly suiting from Joann's, but it still looks pretty good, and I have enough left to make a pair of Plus fours (Breeches) at a later date. (I bought the ones he's wearing in later photos) <br />
<br />
The first photos were ones I took on his actual Birthday. I hadn't quite finished it, so it was safety pinned together! lol!!<br />
<br />
The Latter photos are of a trip we made this past weekend to Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC. He got so many great compliments, and was a Total little Gentleman!<br />

The hair bow is approximately 4" long with a barrette style clasp on it, made in a soft teal blue cotton with purple flowers. There's even a bit of gold sheen to the lattice pattern! <br />

This is a pacifier lanyard. It's approximately 6" long with a sturdy plastic clasp on it. And trust me, I made my son one of these! It's strong, but it won't hurt like metal would. The opposite end has an elastic loop for going around the pacifier. It's made in pale green linen with white crochet lace.<br />

The giveaway will run for a week and a day, that is until the 18th. <br />
<br />
One entry you'll notice is a "Blog Post Comment." It's a bit of a survey. I've recently acquired an embroidery machine, (I know! Modern machine!) and am now able to monogram ect. So in your comment, please let me know of a handmade item that you have searched high and low for but couldn't find. Preferably something you can monogram. Or you can mention something that you like to buy "Home Sewn" on a regular basis. What catches your eye?<br />
<br />
Thank you all so much for following me and enjoying my work, I hope you'll enter and share with your friends!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Just before my wedding I ordered in a length of China silk, meant to be a nightgown for a certain night. Sadly I ran out of time, so my mother gifted me one in my style from the Victorian Trading Company. (Which I still wear and love!)<br />
<br />
But what became of the silk you ask? I'm coming to that.<br />
<br />
Around Thanksgiving I began to wonder what I would do for myself as a Christmas outfit. I was short on time, low on energy, and slap out of money due to shopping for others.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpF5cXvPU2qmljTQ87V65yJfYjBSGBzsYxjwtVFTSDrhqhZvrecKMuUYEKp2zetgHj1GHjLQ_VtFBSo6_y6CY504fr0ovO6-EdJjOAXDNV8u77BvNeXjyn8HBlyUrFtufNJgVQLsOYWw/s1600/image-55765%25281%2529.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpF5cXvPU2qmljTQ87V65yJfYjBSGBzsYxjwtVFTSDrhqhZvrecKMuUYEKp2zetgHj1GHjLQ_VtFBSo6_y6CY504fr0ovO6-EdJjOAXDNV8u77BvNeXjyn8HBlyUrFtufNJgVQLsOYWw/s320/image-55765%25281%2529.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So I started rummaging around in my stash and came across the silk. I realized I had bought enough for a blouse AND a nightgown! (Which I still have yet to make..) <br />
<br />
I dug around in my patterns and pulled out my copy of <a href="http://www.pastpatterns.com/8643.html">Past Patterns 8643</a> And got started.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuIJoH31MLFip0CL0ZxMLWR_JpScu0XQ0i5eMPxuVXhHw9ejuEwqcn_XdxvTWMhlnaGJfo6JmD-yqnvuwRXd_INn_eYKHX-cJQRbYiigdrc9j8PyzHjQ3TQmJUvqZPSLgJDlQahNFtpA/s1600/image-55765.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuIJoH31MLFip0CL0ZxMLWR_JpScu0XQ0i5eMPxuVXhHw9ejuEwqcn_XdxvTWMhlnaGJfo6JmD-yqnvuwRXd_INn_eYKHX-cJQRbYiigdrc9j8PyzHjQ3TQmJUvqZPSLgJDlQahNFtpA/s320/image-55765.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It came together beautifully, and it felt so elegant sliding it on. I used leftover wedding buttons as well to finish it off.<br />
<br />
<br />
My Husband and I then went on a photo shoot around our historic neighborhood <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIGrr7grmYJGnPL-hj6FiD4-7stZ6ZbhqqQClYxnciMO1ncXYCRoohEh5HtV5gSgbcYeV5smBaZhxKriiwUlM0GKxLbg2-CgbBBzlftJKvqJKu_ruVQHAByHpC6C5Z_z9IX5IMP-iKkg/s1600/image-65659.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIGrr7grmYJGnPL-hj6FiD4-7stZ6ZbhqqQClYxnciMO1ncXYCRoohEh5HtV5gSgbcYeV5smBaZhxKriiwUlM0GKxLbg2-CgbBBzlftJKvqJKu_ruVQHAByHpC6C5Z_z9IX5IMP-iKkg/s320/image-65659.jpeg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I had big plans to deck the halls and trim the tree and make something very special for a certain little boy to cherish.<br />
<br />
Sadly very little of that happened.<br />
<br />
Unforeseen circumstances meant that Christmas was much quieter and humbler than I had hoped. But wasn't that the way of the very first one? Quiet and humble Our Lord entered this world, and we were the better for celebrating it that way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqkrusbx6SgT_aQhr9X_RRXMoIWsmiM3Xv39_SC53UKO5YFWJqJW4f1Yl-9mzLaJ9UgcUkpUNO6YoKyxuPr2yonh1Vkku59JJ9b9hmLgNZj8KYeCBeTLxKrIwRPVwlktOpMQTbCK72ug/s1600/image-65680.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqkrusbx6SgT_aQhr9X_RRXMoIWsmiM3Xv39_SC53UKO5YFWJqJW4f1Yl-9mzLaJ9UgcUkpUNO6YoKyxuPr2yonh1Vkku59JJ9b9hmLgNZj8KYeCBeTLxKrIwRPVwlktOpMQTbCK72ug/s320/image-65680.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
Two weeks before the big day, though, I realized my hands were still empty and I had nothing prepared to go under the tree. A desperate search and I found what I had been looking for.<br />
<br />
A few clicks and <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/238998199/mohair-teddy-bear-kit-pattern-and?ref=shop_home_active_1">THIS</a> old time teddy bear kit was on its way.<br />
<br />
E-bug's favorite movie of all time is the original Disney "Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" so I wanted to make him his own old fashioned "Steiff" style Teddy bear. <br />
<br />
It does go to show that you should always read the fine print. His name is "Tiny Ted" for a reason! lol! He only stands about 8" tall. But for a little boy, a little bear was perfect. This kit came with the pattern and fabric for the bear and the little red felt jacket. It also had a small piece of teddy print cotton to do with as you please. She even traced the teddy bear pieces onto the mohair so all you had to do was cut! <br />
<br />
HOWEVER this kit did not come with the eyes or joint components needed to finish it off. And sadly a trip to Hobby Lobby came up short when it came to teddy bear parts. The only things they had were plastic and for much bigger bears!<br />
<br />
Not having time to spare to order the parts I decided to improvise. I sewed the arms and legs on sturdily and used one of the bigger joints I had bought for the head. I then embroidered a little face on to him as best I could.<br />

<br />
Some months I succeeded more than others. lol!<br />
<br />
For month one, I simply repeated his coming home outfit. Breastfeeding struggles and an utterly exhausted Mama lead to zero time or inclination to make anything.<br />

By three months, we had finally gotten ourselves into a rhythm, and mommy had her groove back!<br />
<br />
A full on vintage sailor suit it was! I used <a href="https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1135071569">THIS</a> pattern from Etsy which I would highly recommend, and had it together in a couple days. Sadly, he had just woken up when we got to the park to take pictures, and was in a foul picture taking mood... lol! <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At Four months there was a bit of an "Uh OH!" I threw together an overall romper, based on a store bought one he had. It was a size six months so I estimated and sized it down.... too much. On the day of the pictures it didn't fit!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So instead I put him in a sailor suit I bought from <a href="https://www.dapperlads.com/index.php">Dapper Lads</a> (Not affiliated) And used his "Christening Blanket" as his "Mommy Made" Item. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This blanket (Or Shawl) Should not be attempted by the faint of heart! It took AGES to complete. I had to use four sets of double pointed needles to make the "Lace" Edging. (I think my yarn was too thick, as it didn't turn out as "Lacy" as in the original. </div>

At Five Months we were back on track!<br />
<br />
<br />
This was the month I discovered that you can find a free pattern for basically anything you want on pinterest and went absolutely crazy!!<br />
<br />
<br />
I used<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744610344635/"> THIS</a> pattern to make his vest. I also had to size it down, as the pattern was for toddlers, but I think it turned out OK in the end.<br />
<br />
I Used <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744610359415/">THIS</a> pattern for his shoes, but seeing as he had just discovered his toes, they didn't stay on long!<br />
<br />
And lastly, though you can't see it, I used <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744610378500/">THIS</a> pattern to make a little tie to go with it. <br />

This Weekend My little baby turned SIX MONTHS! Where has the time gone?<br />
<br />
I was once again short on time, so I did a re-fashion, instead of making something from scratch. I Bought these pants for E-bug at Easter and they were far too big, as someone had switched them on the hangar for a bigger size... But they sure fit now!<br />
<br />
I loosely used <a href="http://beauty4ashes7.blogspot.com/2012/10/plus-2-how-to-tutorial.html">Beauty from Ashes Plus Two's Tutorial</a> to turn them into Knickerbockers. It was so easy that I intend to do it a lot more!<br />
<br />
And then I just so happened to have a scrap of blue striped seersucker that I used <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744610560877/">THIS</a> tutorial to turn into suspenders.<br />
<br />
Well, I hope you've enjoyed this look into our Little Man's life. Hopefully I can get back to doing more blogging soon, but you know how life is with little ones. :D <br />

<br />
I found <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744608808093/">This</a> outfit on Pinterest and immediately fell in love with it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3WgL-TfriRCAvaoKWxPq1CHMtD7qvm_CgQvAKiPupxVuuj5Ica6DhHKf1USBxY_M8xfsowo1cAGHFme6ZS8YX6qqNfOr11CHb71hE3P3pXmMIQMazFtk7kb6fTGeyfeDRciWJCqQECA/s1600/IMG_4764.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3WgL-TfriRCAvaoKWxPq1CHMtD7qvm_CgQvAKiPupxVuuj5Ica6DhHKf1USBxY_M8xfsowo1cAGHFme6ZS8YX6qqNfOr11CHb71hE3P3pXmMIQMazFtk7kb6fTGeyfeDRciWJCqQECA/s320/IMG_4764.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I was certain it was the cuddliest thing I could ever bring home a snugly baby in. Sadly I thought it was outrageously expensive for something he would probably wear once. Plus I wanted him to come home in something I made.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjptJo0FBt8xTt_HdjuwHHAJgQ4HlD5KKW3YL7GYQDxnxWuqPv_ULGZIQkNtNtgY7NDXr6DQtzq7wIw3lDVg7S4Lt7TWrh-1DK2apdw_iU1qenIVuQhhkUOnG4L5-hLq7z3vBkjJLMJSQ/s1600/IMG_4547.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjptJo0FBt8xTt_HdjuwHHAJgQ4HlD5KKW3YL7GYQDxnxWuqPv_ULGZIQkNtNtgY7NDXr6DQtzq7wIw3lDVg7S4Lt7TWrh-1DK2apdw_iU1qenIVuQhhkUOnG4L5-hLq7z3vBkjJLMJSQ/s320/IMG_4547.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
So I went in search of a knitting pattern to match. After a long rummage I found this one.<br />
<br />
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-aran-bodysuit-hat--booties<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjorzeF2RPDOAFPgMF4xVFR77_PZGnds01srl1FRT4u2RDir9WZ1s7LL3LQuyT6Wp9DpPeGwI9BVdyVSCRnYT_aOK0Z0Zs1QBuEnPftjRJ5ytlZtGII9xPO2op0n-duD0hojLpz5Fxpww/s1600/IMG_4703.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjorzeF2RPDOAFPgMF4xVFR77_PZGnds01srl1FRT4u2RDir9WZ1s7LL3LQuyT6Wp9DpPeGwI9BVdyVSCRnYT_aOK0Z0Zs1QBuEnPftjRJ5ytlZtGII9xPO2op0n-duD0hojLpz5Fxpww/s320/IMG_4703.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Held together with hairpins, while I waited for the buttons to come in.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I then went in search of yarn. I wanted a traditional "Aran" color, but I was unsure of doing it in wool, just in case of an allergy. I debated for ages in the baby yarn section of Joann's where I couldn't find anything remotely close to the creamy white that I wanted. Instead I went with a soft grey, and ended up really loving it!<br />
<br />
This pattern was really enjoyable to work with, and I didn't have any problems with it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZaK_5DB3J3HzE3eqImc6u3BzobYx_m0i_9DuPvOH_JNX7dz2zcouWr64YKIxO06ckuiBmgYUMo_SjaK_-q8oTlU-v-sIAWRQh7infaxNpNKPmcmbtGVqtFb4OFs2WD3nzu1M_mqokWg/s1600/IMG_4709.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZaK_5DB3J3HzE3eqImc6u3BzobYx_m0i_9DuPvOH_JNX7dz2zcouWr64YKIxO06ckuiBmgYUMo_SjaK_-q8oTlU-v-sIAWRQh7infaxNpNKPmcmbtGVqtFb4OFs2WD3nzu1M_mqokWg/s320/IMG_4709.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The buttonholes on the legs did end up being uneven, but that could have been pregnant mommy brain error.<br />
<br />
I decided to go with <a href="https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1101685905">natural wooden buttons</a> to finish it off, and I didn't regret it!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhotJu1e5G8hP8_uPj2JaylPlzhcKfofVGt06Kf9SdL871TbgL36tYcgbdPZfMoVHeo1bV7am96QV687vShicHA9L2ijnFeJU_HgN9ppnydTPHajoDVo1RoGxXMdLKfvFk7DfQpnO7JFw/s1600/IMG_4765.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhotJu1e5G8hP8_uPj2JaylPlzhcKfofVGt06Kf9SdL871TbgL36tYcgbdPZfMoVHeo1bV7am96QV687vShicHA9L2ijnFeJU_HgN9ppnydTPHajoDVo1RoGxXMdLKfvFk7DfQpnO7JFw/s320/IMG_4765.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Coming Home!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I wasn't crazy about the hat pattern with it, as it looked rather like pigtails in my opinion, and I figured that wasn't so good on a boy...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZOL8-9ai02632rWjL09ks3eCUc74aEEN1mahQs92k7qIPm5kNNg6SrRslndfOZ8ThkyJMawN5xf6aXgb-d-8sjbqVTT0Jou8JUQjswNg6f9C8NOxf_FjEzIYbrIKXxCcykbVVgJi7SA/s1600/IMG_4772.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZOL8-9ai02632rWjL09ks3eCUc74aEEN1mahQs92k7qIPm5kNNg6SrRslndfOZ8ThkyJMawN5xf6aXgb-d-8sjbqVTT0Jou8JUQjswNg6f9C8NOxf_FjEzIYbrIKXxCcykbVVgJi7SA/s320/IMG_4772.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
So I searched Etsy for another pattern and came across <a href="https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1098637148">This</a> one.The hat pattern only came in 3 sizes and one of them was not "Newborn." My option then was to keep looking, or attempt to resize.... Resize it was. I ended up just taking a wild guess and using smaller needles. It actually fit rather well, and actually still fits. :D<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">His one month pictures, it still fit! </td></tr>

A gloriously Wonderful ride!<br />
<br />
I wanted to go ahead and write all of this down while it was still fresh on my mind. I promise not to go into too many gory details, but if Birth Stories are not your thing, go ahead and skip this post. I've just waited a long time to tell this story.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMzoWw4m2qxQup-anQKC9Zk6B5nLDCDfz9W3CuMHhF4T9eib5Ae5TS0qUqn8FzdkksfIcHMak4fFuPtYFiwVvf-jWBnH3EhUcF9qv6lc7FK7oUgOfpbmJHHBO6hDxdHDgi1rQrJHtjkA/s1600/12522912_10209068059766824_217674616206552838_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMzoWw4m2qxQup-anQKC9Zk6B5nLDCDfz9W3CuMHhF4T9eib5Ae5TS0qUqn8FzdkksfIcHMak4fFuPtYFiwVvf-jWBnH3EhUcF9qv6lc7FK7oUgOfpbmJHHBO6hDxdHDgi1rQrJHtjkA/s320/12522912_10209068059766824_217674616206552838_n.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
I had been in pre- labor for two miserable weeks. I had been cramping on and off and had been dilated to 3cm one week, and the second to 4cm. The waiting game was killing me, as I was planning on going natural, the suspense made everything worse.<br />
<br />
At 4:30 on Sunday morning January 17th, I felt my waters break. Apparently it was only a little, but at the time I didn't know that, I was just sure that's what it was.<br />
<br />
A call to the doctor and we were on our way to the hospital.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEishFOOnui8CoUZtZc2s34UluuKcghfs2-WJnV_H3_vB3Xr_2qnKJ95NThF0Dk4RxkuhdFF3dtSOmWc7-dxy_8cs7WZ5-7IwYRDaKiS6LYUnGjI_zpHE4uSIbpY2gxB8nbQWny3LCgWdw/s1600/12524187_10209067939123808_8157989460636026283_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="235" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEishFOOnui8CoUZtZc2s34UluuKcghfs2-WJnV_H3_vB3Xr_2qnKJ95NThF0Dk4RxkuhdFF3dtSOmWc7-dxy_8cs7WZ5-7IwYRDaKiS6LYUnGjI_zpHE4uSIbpY2gxB8nbQWny3LCgWdw/s320/12524187_10209067939123808_8157989460636026283_n.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
Once there, it was confirmed that my waters had broken, but not completely, and I still wasn't in much pain. But no matter, Our son was on his way and we were given a room.<br />
<br />
A little while later, our nurse Be-bopped in, proclaimed she was a doula, and would be so glad to help us on our way. It then took her three tries and help from another nurse to put my IV port in.<br />
<br />
At 10:45 when my doctor got there, I still wasn't feeling much of anything, so they broke my waters the rest of the way and had me walking the halls. That was when things really started to ramp up. Intense contractions every 3-5 minutes. The only thing that helped was to stand and sway through them. So that meant no birth ball, no bed, no sitting, no rest. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkOul2RSOKOpO034qLupzTLf9aXqe4QFnzUBD2f2_NmTGllCE1yuyydqqTpvY_MQvyUjbN3pu2g9I0TfCAqGp_fClk1Zubzp7g1mYpJ5vXq9YHBdZReORzKd88tv9WdvGvDhZQUcJPnA/s1600/12507320_10153759376761826_8069741542651368135_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkOul2RSOKOpO034qLupzTLf9aXqe4QFnzUBD2f2_NmTGllCE1yuyydqqTpvY_MQvyUjbN3pu2g9I0TfCAqGp_fClk1Zubzp7g1mYpJ5vXq9YHBdZReORzKd88tv9WdvGvDhZQUcJPnA/s320/12507320_10153759376761826_8069741542651368135_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
By 6:00 they were coming every 1:30-2 minutes, and when checked, I was still only at around 5-6cm. I also didn't have any energy left to push through a contraction. My doctor suggested pitocin, and I knew what was coming. I was ready for the Epidural. My nurse talked me out of it, but by the shift change at 7pm, I was done. I just wanted to hold my son at all costs. Our new nurse was wonderful, and understood I meant what I said. It took until 8:00 for the anesthetist to get there, get everything hooked up, and for the medicine to kick in.<br />
<br />
The epidural wasn't easy either, I shook from the moment they put it in until baby was here. But the pain was gone and I could rest.<br />
<br />
That phase didn't last long though! By 9:00 when they checked me, I was complete and ready to push. And at 9:38, he was here! All ten perfect fingers and ten perfect toes of him! He weighed in at 7.14lbs and measured 20" long.<br />

<br />
It's been a rough week physically for both of us, with healing issues on my part, which made breastfeeding difficult, and led to sleepless nights and weight loss on Baby's side. But we are both now on the mend and his weight is already improving!<br />
<br />
<br />I'll get back to blogging as soon as I can, until then I'll be enjoying my cuddles. :D<br />

No not that many years, just almost twenty. The year was 1996, and I had just turned 5. I didn't know it then, but I was sitting in my future Mother-In-Law's Kindergarten class at the little private Christian school I attended. <br>December came around and we were going to put on a little nativity, just us kindergarteners for that year's Christmas play.<br>
<br>My best friend and I (Who coincidentaly is still one of my dearest friends), had ,had a rivalry going on all year, and this moment was no different. Both of us knew we were contenders for the part of Mary, and the competition was fierce.<br>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDqpxYna0WQLp_Yq0eLnDM6YA4i4CxWjabSG-CJ3oqcIW0ihAyBOb5V4opokOr7fH_u7EEigdqcP1XKF08mji6bYvzNcwj76hemY5XiRsux5FAUccu5To4BYsAIvwolUCOi-0_-ACP1Q/s1600/Best+fwiends.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDqpxYna0WQLp_Yq0eLnDM6YA4i4CxWjabSG-CJ3oqcIW0ihAyBOb5V4opokOr7fH_u7EEigdqcP1XKF08mji6bYvzNcwj76hemY5XiRsux5FAUccu5To4BYsAIvwolUCOi-0_-ACP1Q/s320/Best+fwiends.jpg" width="320"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This was a year or two later when we got along just a little bit better. lol! </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br>The day came when we were to find out our parts, and written on the chalkboard was easch of our names and the part we had been given.<br>
<br>But there at the top was something that set my little heart to anger, Jessica's name next to the part of Mary, and mine but a lowly angel.<br>
<br>Well I just decided I'd fix that, surely there had been a mistake! Mrs. G. left the room and I promptly pulled a chair over to the blackboard and switched our names in my large, uneven, childish script. <br>I'll never forget my beloved teacher's reaction, though. Instead of anger, or punnishment, she simply explained to me the importance of the angel Gabriel, and the part that he played in delivering the good news.<br>
<br>I supposed after that, that I could endure the part, for her sake mostly.<br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDsb27N6QjPfB0Kuyfr4VDu1K1GN1qiQzGpubARYDePG78eqQxPuhoo5HV6Rwm6H0vY7Wf1HY9dnXUSbrEhm5apioUirB1GoPs2hBorcmOshtktZYnZzLtqNqOFxUCFtvisSydJh9KQQ/s640/blogger-image--925407460.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDsb27N6QjPfB0Kuyfr4VDu1K1GN1qiQzGpubARYDePG78eqQxPuhoo5HV6Rwm6H0vY7Wf1HY9dnXUSbrEhm5apioUirB1GoPs2hBorcmOshtktZYnZzLtqNqOFxUCFtvisSydJh9KQQ/s640/blogger-image--925407460.jpg"></a></div><br>Now fast foreward back to 2015. This year our church decided to put on a little nativity for the children's service. A very simple affair with Mary and Joseph, a Manger, and the three wise men. Naturally, being 8 months along myself, I was asked to play the part of Mary. I couldn't help but feel a little thrill of excitement, twenty years later and It would be my name on the black board! <br>But today I must admit, it was a different feeling all together.<br>
<br>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The one silly selfie I got to send to Jessica. (Captioned "Nanny Nanny Boo boo") </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br>There was a flurry of silly costumes, and a sad female baby doll wrapped in a towel, but I couldn't help but be awed by it all.<br>
<br>As this mother, "Great with Child" was escorted down the aisle by my husband, I began to tear up. <br>I imagined Mary, a much younger girl than myself, being told that she would have a child out of wedlock, in a time when that meant almost certain death. I can imagine being completely overwhelmed by it. Having to tell Joseph, her parent's, her friends.<br>
<br>I can imagine the relief that Joseph believed her, having been told himself, but still having the humiliation of the community looking down on her, shunning her, maybe even hating her. <br>I imagined that later, just when her time was upon her, ready and scared to death of bearing her first child, being told by a distant monarch that she had to leave everything familiar to her and go to a place she had possibly never seen before.<br>
<br>I thought of how blessed I am to be able to look foreward to giving birth in a clean hospital environment with kind and knowledgable nurses and doctors, ready and waiting if anything goes wrong, and I imagined how frightened she must have been. Feeling the beginnings of her pain and not being able to find a place to stay, and finally being offered a place in a barn, the dirtiest place in the world.<br>
<br>But then as I sat down next to that manger and sad looking baby doll, I watched the "Wise Men" come down the aisle and lay their gifts before it. Though I know they came later, the shepherds still came that night. I can't imagine how awestruck Mary and Josheph must have felt that night. People came to worship this tiny baby that had been hated and shunned since the moment it was conceived, but this child would soon save the world, one heart at a time.<br>

It has been such a blessing and I'm so glad I took the plunge to find out more about it!<br />
<br />
But that's not why I'm posting. At our bi-weekly meetings one or two of the ladies will bring a few light breakfast items for all to enjoy while we're there. Because of my gluten intolerance, I tend to go into meal gatherings with a grain of salt. I usually eat before hand, and then if I find something I can have, I'll have just a little to keep from seeming rude. At the last meeting my allergy finally came to light as I had to decline to take any of it home with me.<br />
<br />
This morning I was amazed to find that the two ladies who brought breakfast this morning not only remembered my allergy, but made sure they had something I could eat! (If you're reading this, Thank you all so much!! I can't tell you what it meant!!)<br />
<br />
It took me until I got home to realize why I was so overwhelmingly grateful. For the rest of this post I'm going to explain why. This morning was a rarity, normally I don't get treated like that. So here are some tips for how NOT to treat someone with an allergy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744609167221/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744609167221/" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKsvZbBTTvBrs4DhyauUQFPbKrHWlYnedL9pjnJnPNiLIrj4VCbnlPwQcZocGkj6-KpSi1PMNzoxPzTPYBEDh7uoFK9z7yCILV15x4k26EPKjAd0c4gv8zMTvGA4yJiVJCHPncLuErig/s1600/0a651161c9fbbed3a004ac0071bb24ab.jpg" /></a></div>
<b>1. Don't treat it like a fad.</b><br />
This may not happen with the more dangerous allergies like peanuts or shellfish, but it happens quite often with Gluten. I have a lot of friends that are Celiac, which is a more intense version than what I have, and most have stated hearing the same reaction. Too many people have heard of a gluten free diet and are following it simply because of the craze. It really won't help you lose weight, that's still going to be carbs and sugar and a gluten free diet won't necessarily keep you away from those two. You may even gain weight.<br />
<br />
But that's beside the point, The Fad is making those of us with an allergy look crazy. Walk into a restaurant, ask for the gluten free menu, and watch the waitress sigh. My Celiac friends then have to further inconvenience the staff by asking that special care be taken with their food. Clean utensils, separate preparation space, ect. If even the tiniest amount of gluten gets in their system they could get very sick. So, no, it is not a fad for us.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Don't treat it like an inconvenience.</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744609167161/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744609167161/" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAI-7CUdbK3eD7BydgGej1aYw3CiSAAMLdnbmGNa6cQDMAfS_4mg1UbcLvz49W4nd9OrjhrsPEitpHaP4N1Ein_skWQWAKmifLRv-5oma7sJYZlx5BQu-SBI_aUDGAOiV_-1MlXSm-2Q/s1600/2e6bd03d32084844f752dc45ed65cdd1.jpg" /></a>This one goes along with the one above. I'll Start by saying I am NOT a picky eater. I'll try anything once.... well almost anything. Anyways, before I found out I was intolerant, I prided myself in being able to find something at any restaurant, that way no matter where someone wanted to go, I wasn't a bother. Now I have to be. There are some places that no matter how carefully I choose I get sick. There are other places that I simply cannot make work, there's just nothing that isn't breaded, or slathered in a sauce I can't eat. This has actually cut out a few places that I used to absolutely love, which is no fun I tell you!<br />
<br />
So believe me when I say, I know it's an inconvenience when everyone wants to go to the Olive Garden and I have to say no. I would LOVE to be able to go and have Alfredo and bread-sticks with everyone, but I can't. It's also no fun to go and just have coffee... The staff kind of look at you funny when you do that.<br />
<br />
So please don't sigh, I really can't help it!<br />
<br />
<b>3. Don't treat it like a contagious disease. </b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744609167225/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744609167225/" border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTCpw-8ytZZG24oRYDxE_wKiORUoXtB7BvJCzLSv8w6MA3KIbkWmXDwu41guaxZW8ped_7MtgrNQ_XyDPK55l5j8Rt7KDwYi-k21jjlyYNuhxTMkYgY68TcpD85FOWSxMoNc-oZPpyKw/s200/48442abf79c7f8f895aab303f4c24453.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
Now, here's the other extreme. There are people that are too cautious, at least in my opinion. Unlike the more severe food allergies, my personal symptoms when I eat wheat are not life threatening. I get a severe headache, a runny nose, I sometimes get sick to my stomach, but in the short term, it probably won't kill me. A celiac will have those ten times worse among others, but for the most part, they still won't go into shock and die. You also cannot catch it from me. I may try to convince you to get checked for it, if I see symptoms that are similar to my own, but that doesn't guarantee that I'm right.<br />
<br />
You can also eat gluten free food! A baked potato is gluten free, so are all other fruits and vegetables, so you have already eaten gluten free food in your lifetime. As for the items such as pasta and soups that have to be made with a different kind of flour, manufacturers really are getting better at it. You can hardly tell the difference! If I or someone else have put gluten free food on the table, Go for it! I'll be glad to know what you think! It's not some kind of kibble that poor little old me is forced to eat. I also certainly can't eat the entire dish myself, don't be afraid to take a helping.<br />
<b></b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b><br /></b>
<b><br /></b>
<b>4. Lastly, DO make the effort. </b><br />
<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744609167190/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/215961744609167190/" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2Xz2WDVkeKvx-t9bJGeDdxbPraRcP1xme1hclk2Qq_BV96mzxsrp1yLjVUnPRXkTNoim-oIV-8OR6_BNCN25Sa_y6lnzCA_dzJB8jO8qIep1kjiKkDz1nH4cB-CowaWAXQiq9XRSDzA/s1600/eee52b63fc60607d1ec674229c3d0327.jpg" /></a>As I said above, I can't tell you how much it means to me when you try! You have gone the distance! I don't have to be the outsider at the meal! I don't have to have made it myself from scratch!! You're awesome!! It's a complete and utter luxury, and be sure I will repay you somehow! Grocery stores are making it easier and easier to find things that I can eat. A lot of them will have a little label on the shelf. The back of the package will also have an allergy label beneath the ingredients. The allergens will be listed in <b>bold. </b>I always say that I can eat anything I like, I just have to go back and make it from scratch. Which sounds complicated, but not so much anymore, there are mixes, and ready made items already on the shelves. Have a recipe you like, but it calls for a tablespoon of flour? Just use a gluten free version, I like "Bob's Red Mill," which I can get at Big Lots for a fraction of the cost of anywhere else.<br />
<br />
Anyways, to wrap it up, a gluten free life is really not all that bad. It takes an extra effort sometimes, and others one has to be the odd man out, but in the end, it's not a bad thing. It will teach you patience, and discipline, and... well... how to cook from scratch. To use the old adage, a person with an allergy is no different than anyone else, there are just things we can't eat. We don't mean to be an inconvenience, and we don't mean to sound rude, so please be kind. We really do appreciate it.<br />
<br />
Much Love!<br />
Megan <br />

Not only has he been taking care of me, and the daily chores, but he's been a busy bee when it comes to our home improvement projects. <br />
<br />
The last few weeks Joshua has taken most of his spare time and repaired and updated the front porch.<br />
<br />
(I wish I had gotten before shots!) <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
